UPG Acquires Seed Resources

United Pet Group (a division of Spectrum Brands Holdings) has acquired Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Seed Resources, LLC, a leading domestic producer and distributor of Birdola premium branded seed cakes and related products for wild birds and squirrels, for $12.5 million in cash.

"This acquisition is consistent with our stated objective to selectively expand our pet supplies business both through organic growth as well as small, targeted bolt-on acquisitions to expand product lines and to create geographic revenue and operational synergies," said Dave Lumley, CEO of Spectrum Brands Holdings.

Seed Resources, with Birdola's strong brand equity, has developed a substantial share of the premium domestic wild bird seed cake business, an attractive segment of the wild bird feeding market.  Other Seed Resources products include bird feeders, suet cakes and duos (combination seed cake and suet).

"We plan to expand distribution for Birdola into such key channels as mass merchandisers, specialty pet retailers and other retail outlets given our well-established presence with these customers," said John Heil, president of United Pet Group.  "We also expect to utilize Seed Resources' sole manufacturing facility in Grand Rapids to complement existing supply chain resources and to provide additional flexibility to meet the needs of our customer base."
