Jardiland is expanding

Mar 6, 2011

This chain was the initiator of the garden centre concept (with pets section) in France and is still surfing on it: 55 Jardiland owned stores and 45 franchisees dot France, to which one may add 9 units in Spain, for a 2010 consolidated turnover of Euro 797 million ($1.1 billion) (+ 1%).

Development is expected, Jardiland aiming to add within the coming 5 years 100 stores in France and, additionally, the target being to reach up to 30 stores and a turnover of  Euro 100 million ($138 million) in Spain.

The garden retail sector economics are demanding: to achieve a €1 million turnover you must invest Euro 1 million. This ratio has not prevented DIY superstores to enter this market: most of them include a significant garden section (with emphasis on hardware). Next and, although the concept never really took off so far, pets superstores may appear. Margins (or mark ups) are more attractive in the pet retail business and can thus favour the arrival of foreign new comers.
