PIJAC develops management practices for feeder rodents

Oct 26, 2013

The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council says that a critical link exists between quality rodents and the health of hundreds of thousands of reptiles in homes across the U.S. It has consequently published a set of Best Management Practices (BMP) for the production and distribution of rats and mice. The first nationwide set of standards for feeder rodents, these BMP were developed by the PIJAC Herp Committee and reflect the quality and wisdom of some of the most prominent rodent producers in the industry, according to the association.

Going beyond the formulas for keeping healthy breeders in a clean setting, PIJAC’s Best Management Practices address the major areas of rodent culture, such as enclosures and buildings, bedding, nutrition, rodent disease prevention and management, transportation of live rodents, euthanasia, sanitation and disposal and zoonotics. The BMP document is available for download at www.pijac.org/FeederRodentBMP.
